Why Are PH Universities Ranked Way, Way Down! THE World University Rankings? Asking As A Friend!
All Top Universities of the Philippines should be ashamed of themselves – none in the “Top 100” of the 2023 Times Higher Education-World University Rankings (THE-WUR)!

There is my alma mater University of the Philippines System (UP) issuing this statement (in
part, from Facebook post shared by
Ramon Yedra):
UP congratulates…
Ateneo De Manila University on ADMU’s placing in the 351-400 bracket in the
latest Times Higher Education-World University Rankings… Such accomplishments…
are a net gain for the honor and prestige of the country and an inspiration for
all Filipino scholars and academics.
Nyet.
A UP alumnus, I say “Top 351-400” is something to sneeze at!
Let us consider “THE World University Rankings Explained” (timeshighereducation.com):
Each university is
judged in five categories covering the core missions of all world-class, global
universities: Teaching, Research, Citations (research influence), Industry
Income and International Outlook.
The top image shows THE-WUR ratings: “Teaching” 30%, “Research”
30%, and “Citations” 30%. Here are my personal ratings:
Teaching
– PH max 30%.
As a teacher myself – UP Los Baños BSA major in Ag Edu, 1965, 2.36
weighted average, Civil Service Professional
1964 – and being a digital denizen since late 1990s, I say we Filipinos are at
the top of the instruction ladder.
Research – PH max 25%.
Having been in-and-out of UP Los Baños since the 1960s, and being a wide
reader, I feel the Philippines is among the top countries in research in many subjects.
Citations
– Ah, PH 07%!
Yes, 07%; how generous of me!?
I am speaking now based on my unmatched desktop publishing
(DTP) experience as one-man band Editor
In Chief of the Philippine Journal of Crop Science (PJCS) based
at UP Los Baños from 2003 to 2008 – starting when the PJCS was 3 years late in
its 3-issues-yearly schedule!
To
emphasize: At 63, I was a one-man band for the PJCS:
Via desktop publishing (DTP): editing, revising, text formatting, page layouting,
positioning images – plus assigning & putting in the cover for each issue
(the middle image above is my favorite, as it emphasizes the role of the PC in publishing).
Singlehandedly,
I made the PJCS up-to-date in 3 years, from being late 3 years – meaning I
worked double-time! 2003-2006, and in 2007 made it “ISI” (“Web of Science”)!
The secret? My talents plus the awesome power of DTP. An
unbeatable record of editorial excellence with DTP! Also, my wide knowledge of
Agriculture came in handy, plus earlier digital editing of innumerable
technical papers, theses and dissertations.
PH
universities suffer from lack of production of intellectual foods via technical
journals – far too few and those come out not often enough! You cannot be cited
if you are not published first.
No
PH University can rank high without publishing more & often –requiring a
publishing mindset. Granting Quality, low
citation means low publishing frequency.
Go
digital! My advice to all the top PH universities? With my help, let us put up
a PH Virtual School for Publishing,
Editorial & Educational Digital Learning (V-Speed Learning). Godspeed
Filipinos!@517
