UP Ranks 412th In The Latest Quacquarelli Rankings Worldwide & Is Proud Of It! Mahiya Ka, UP, My Alma Mater!

Image
Are you rejoicing that the University of the Philippines (UP) is “the top school in the country” according to the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings? As a UP Los Baños alumnus, I say UP can be proud only if it were among the Top 100. QS computes the rankings of world universities according to this “Methodology” (“Web of Science,”  Wikipedia ,  en.wikipedia.org ), my italics: 40% Academic peer review 20% Faculty/student ratio 20% citations per faculty 10% employer reputation 05% international student ratio 05% international staff ratio 40%: “Academic peer review” –  Your peers will rate you zero if you are  not  a published author! 20%: “Citations” –  You cannot be cited by authors of technical papers if you are  not  published. Now then, a maximum of 60% QS rating actually comes from technical publications. And in this sphere, UP Diliman is  at   the   bottom ! Proof – In the website   UP Diliman ...

High Speed With High Quality In Your Publication – How To Achieve Both Simultaneously? Via Regenerative Desktop Publishing!

Image
Thursday, 13 Oct 2022 (Manila), creating my new blog “Regenerative Desktop Publishing” (where you’re reading this now), I declared that I have come up with a new package of, nay reinvented modern publishing by thinking out an entirely new term – “ Regenerative Desktop Publishing ” (Regenerative DTP) – which is publishing in high speed with high-quality results. The image above is the cover of the Philippine Journal of Crop Science (PJCS) of April 2021, the latest issue ( Philippine Journal of Crop Science, philippjcropsci.com ). The PJCS is published by the Crop Science Society of the Philippines (CSSP). The latest issue being April 2021 as of 14 Oct 2022 means the PJCS is late by 4 issues: Aug 2021, Dec 2021, April 2022, and Aug 2022. This is sad news. This is a PH Editor In Chief speaking. I'm thinking now of offering my services as the digital Executive Editor of PJCS. I am not a stranger to the PJCS – I was the Editor In Chief 2001-2008 who wrought a miracle, rescu...

Why Are PH Universities Ranked Way, Way Down! THE World University Rankings? Asking As A Friend!

Image
All Top Universities of the Philippines should be ashamed of themselves – none in the “Top 100” of the 2023 Times Higher Education- World University Rankings (THE-WUR)! (Arrow image from pngtree.com ) There is my alma mater University of the Philippines System (UP) issuing this statement (in part, from Facebook post shared by Ramon Yedra ): UP congratulates… Ateneo De Manila University on ADMU’s placing in the 351-400 bracket in the latest Times Higher Education-World University Rankings… Such accomplishments… are a net gain for the honor and prestige of the country and an inspiration for all Filipino scholars and academics. Nyet. A UP alumnus, I say “Top 351-400” is something to sneeze at! Let us consider “THE World University Rankings Explained” ( timeshighereducation.com ): Each university is judged in five categories covering the core missions of all world-class, global universities: Teaching, Research, Citations (research influence), Industry Income and International...

Can An Almost-82-Year-Old Male Ilocano Work From Homer (WFH) Deliver Excellent Editing Results With Technical Manuscripts In English Via Microsoft Word? Asking For A Friend!

Image
From my personal experience dating back to 1976, manuscripts for technical journals have mostly 3 problems: missing parts, incomplete or poor reasoning, and problematic grammar. Whatever your target journal is, I can help you based on my varied editorial works (plural) in the last 46 years. (Image sources: “5 Types” from iLovePhD, ilovephd.com ; (“Write, Edit” from Washington University, icts.wustl.edu ) ANN asks, “What Are The Major Reasons For Scientific Manuscript Rejection?” and answers her own question ( Scholar Hangout , manuscriptedit.com ): Research paper writing is a specialized skill that all academicians have to learn. While publication is an essential part of the profession, the rates of rejection by journals are too high. Estimates suggest that for highly regarded journals like Cell, Nature , and Science , the rejection rate is as high as 97%! That is to say, of all the 100 submissions, only 3 make it through editorial and peer review scrutiny, and this is for top profes...

Problematic With Your Technical Journal? Look No Farther For Your Editor In Chief Who Is A One-Man Band! Frank A Hilario, WFH

These are digital times; the Internet came to the Philippines in 1991 – yet 31 years later, even in the state-financed University of the Philippines System (UP), there are very few technical journals – and UP hardly makes those publications come out on time! UP is snubbing desktop publishing (DTP)! I am an alumnus of UP Los Baños, BSA Ag Edu (1965); Civil Service Professional (1964); self-taught digital writer, editor, formatter, layout artist, desktop publisher (DTP) – the DTP copy saved as portable document format (pdf) being the final file before commercial printing. I’m your one-man-digital band in manuscripts & publications. I know of a government agency – nameless here – that used to publish a technical journal but has stopped for years and now wants to publish again. They have my email; if they want me to restart that journal, they have to “show me the money” – I mean, they should convince me that their office has allotted a budget for the regular publication of their jour...

Digital Publishing is one Smart Revolution today. If you’re looking for a desktop publisher for your book, look no further! First with the desktop computer and later with the personal computer (PC), I have desktop published (DTPed) about 20 books in the last 28 years. Yes, I’m an original aboriginal, Ilocano. Yes, I use Microsoft Word – while MS Word is not called a desktop publisher (DTP), my DTPing books via MS Word means I had mastered the ins-and-outs of this software a long, long time ago yet! And with my UPLB BS Agriculture major in Ag Edu, Civil Service Professional, I say I am a good student because I have a good teacher! Discovering will get you places. In 1994, I desktop published my first book, for UPLB professor Ofelia Karganilla Bautista (OKB) – her book was Introduction To Tropical Horticulture (Second Edition) published by Searca. The book’s Introduction in part says ( searca.org ): The revision of the first [edition] was done with the recognition that there have...
